Electronic ticketing is the process of issuing, selling and validating travel tickets in digital format, without physical media such as paper or RFID cards. In this guide we look at what it concretely means for a transport company and the benefits it brings.
For decades the ticket was a physical object: a slip to validate or a card to tap on a reader. Electronic ticketing flips this concept. The ticket becomes a record stored in the cloud, represented by a unique QR Code. There's nothing left to print, distribute or keep in a warehouse.
The flow of modern electronic ticketing has four stages:
Eliminating the physical medium means eliminating an entire chain of costs: printing, distribution, tax warehouse management, replacement of lost cards. On top of that you get real-time visibility on sales and revenue, impossible with traditional systems.
Careful: printing a ticket with a barcode is not true electronic ticketing. The difference is the architecture: a genuinely electronic system lives in the cloud, where every transaction is recorded and synced across all channels in real time.
