The QR code has become the standard for digital tickets in transport. But how does it really work and why is it more secure than a physical card? Let's see it simply.
A common mistake is thinking the QR "contains" the ticket. In reality the QR is just a unique key pointing to a record in the cloud database. All information — validity, route, category — lives on the server, not in the code.
At purchase, the system creates a record in the cloud and generates a linked QR code. The passenger receives it on their smartphone or via email. Each QR is unique and cannot be fraudulently reused.
When the operator scans the QR, the app queries the server in real time: is the ticket valid? Has it already been used? For which route? The answer comes instantly, and the validation is recorded immediately.
A physical card can be cloned or forged. A cloud-native QR can't: verification happens on the server, where the anti-fraud logic is centralised. If someone tries to reuse an already-validated ticket, the system blocks it.
Modern systems also handle offline mode: validations are marked as provisional and synced as soon as the connection returns, keeping traceability intact.
